Release Date: October 3, 2014

Know thyself...
All her life, Desdemona has seen things others haven't. Dragons, knights, dwarves, kids with three eyes. Heeding her mother's advice, she keeps silent about this and struggles through life, pretending everything is normal.
At her mother's death, Desdemona returns to a home haunted with memories but she is determined to not be shaken from what little normalcy she has. However, when her brother is murdered and she uncovers a family secret, Desdemona realizes that there is more to what she sees. Perhaps a whole other world, one that's willing to kill to have her as its own.
Excerpt:
I burst into my mother’s home, throwing my
purse onto the floor. Slapping on a light, I turn to a writing desk and yank
out a drawer, dumping the contents onto the floor and rummaging through them.
Finding nothing, I move on to the next before riffling through what’s on the
desk’s top.
I tear through the living room, even
pulling books from the shelves and shaking them, as if I expect the necklace to
come tumbling out. Pulling up cushions and unzipping them, I yank out the
stuffing to search that. Before long, I stand in the middle of a mess, panting.
Sweat prickles my forehead.
Nothing here, I move onto the kitchen,
slapping on lights as I go. The search slows down as the franticness
fades.
I’m actually thinking about dumping the
cereal from its boxes when Martin walks through the kitchen doorway. “What are
you doing?” he asks.
He doesn’t have his helmet and now I can
make out the shape on his breastplate: a sun with wavy rays.
A Sun-King, Edmund had said.
“What are you?” I demand.
“I am a servant of the crown. My name is
Martin Avens.”
“I thought maybe there was something here
that— that someone was searching for. My aunt’s trunk was broken apart. She’s
dead now.” Where is Edmund?
“Clever thinking. There is a key of sorts
that opens the barriers between your world and mine. Desdemona, you are in
great danger. The people who are after you, who killed your brother and aunt,
and wish to take the key to lower the barrier between your world and ours. That
would be disastrous. Already, parts of our world are dying due to the turmoil
within the Willows, due to someone’s tampering. We don’t know who that person
is, and for as long as we don’t know, you are in peril. You must come with me.”
