SYNOPSIS

Welcome to Mystic, Texas, where the past stays alive in more ways than one.

Vanessa Power, a budding Indie Romance author, believes the town is calling her name, being the new life and fresh start she’s craving. She’s met an amazing group of women who have a regular book club, reading only Indie Authors. Unfortunately, her new house is in worse shape than she thought and holds more mysteries than she’s prepared for. And then there’s the handyman.

Linc Patterson holds more mysteries than her house and the town combined, with a past he won’t reveal in a package which is built for nothing short of sin.

Linc is captivated by his new boss, the only person in town who will give him a job, but only because she doesn’t know he’s an ex-con. Can he keep his past locked away, while at the same time indulging in his fantasies with the pleasantly curvy and deliciously sexy Vanessa? Probably not.

They are both looking for a new start in life. Will they be able to find it together? Or will something sinister keep them apart?

Excerpt:

Later, Vanessa was downstairs painting, when Linc called out to her. She hadn’t been imagining him upstairs, sweaty, at all. His grunts as he moved heavy pieces around hadn’t affected her in the least. So when he yelled her name, she didn’t totally run to do his bidding.

Lies.
She tried not to look too eager as she stuck her head around the door where he worked. Linc was standing there in a pair of low-slung jeans, showing off a beautiful torso that made her mouth dry. She still couldn’t get used to it.

“Can you hold this sheetrock up there while I screw it in?” He’d apparently finished the floors in this room and was moving on to the ceilings.

Unable to squeak out an answer, she nodded and went to the ladder he had set up.

“Be really still. This scaffolding isn’t real sturdy,” he cautioned as he held it while Vanessa not-so-elegantly climbed up. The sheetrock was propped up with wood pieces, so she wouldn’t have to bear the entire weight of it herself, which was probably a good thing. Vanessa got into place and reached up to hold the sheetrock flush against the ceiling, and Linc climbed up and stood behind her.

Oh. God.

His body heat against her back was intense and warmed her all over. It was like suddenly being inside of an oven as Linc was surrounding her. He put his hands over hers and adjusted the sheetrock a bit, aligning it to the corner while sparks of energy flowed from his hands up her arm, like a shock. As he reached around her with the electric screwdriver, she could smell him—his clean sweat—musky and sweet—laced with the scent of leather and aftershave. It made her lightheaded. She couldn’t stop watching his arms as the muscles undulated under the skin with effortless power. His breaths in her ear sent tingles throughout her body, and Vanessa had a hard time being still, wanting to rub her thighs together to stop the pooling moisture in her panties from running down her thighs.

Yeah. She thought she had repressed all this wanting to rub on him like a cat in heat business, but now it was back in full force. But he had been mostly professional and she wasn’t going to be the one to break the professionalism between them. So she didn’t act on her impulses.

Besides, he’d been so frustrated about the book earlier. And his bi-polar mood swings were ridiculous. Sometimes, he didn’t even look at her, and others, like now, he was all over her. And he was her employee, so she couldn’t beg him to screw her like she wanted to. It would ruin everything, right?

Even if she longed to turn around on the ladder and lick him all over.

“Good… That’s real good,” he murmured in her ear as he fastened the sheetrock to the ceiling, sending all sorts of erotic thoughts through her head before inhaling deeply behind her. Goose bumps erupted across her skin, and it took everything inside her to not whimper. The ease with which he’d screwed the panel of material to the ceiling suggested she might not be necessary in this whole process, but she wasn’t going to say so.

Resting his hand at her hip, he maneuvered her across the scaffolding, as if she were a dainty little thing. “Other end?”

“Sure,” she managed to squeak. And they did it all over again, seven more times. Vanessa was a weak puddle of goo by the time they had finished. And the look Linc gave her when they’d climbed off the scaffolding was loaded. Heated. Anything but professional.

She had no fucking idea what to do with it.

“What’s perfect?”
“This right here.  The stars.  Aren’t they beautiful?”  She glanced over to find Jake staring at her.
“You’re beautiful.”
His hand cupped her neck and he came in close.  “Can I?”
Miriam didn’t respond.  She licked her lips as if they weren’t listening to her brain, which was emphatically yelling at her to stop this.
Jake obviously wasn’t listening to her internal monologue as his lips captured hers in a tentative kiss.  Her brain reminded her he was an asshole at the bar, he’d given her coke yesterday, he was mixed up in Tres Lobos, and he stole from his parents.  It was screaming at her that this was a bad idea.
But at the touch of his lips on hers, the lizard part of her brain—the part which was just made to eat, sleep, and have sex—told her to go for it.  She whimpered into his lips in defeat, and his arms went around her waist, pulling her close as he deepened the kiss.  Jake’s lips were soft, his mouth warm, and the aftershave exquisite.  She didn’t want him to ever let her go.
“Oh my God,” she breathed at him between kisses.  His tongue delved into her mouth, but before she lost herself completely, she pulled back.  “We can’t do this.”
He kissed her again, muttering against her mouth, “Why not?”
“I can think of half a dozen reasons off the top of my head.”
That seemed to stop him, but he didn’t let go of her.  Jake just looked at her quizzically, as if he saw absolutely nothing wrong with the fact they were kissing.  He apparently didn’t realize he had a dual personality and was a complete shit half the time he existed.  He finally looked up, taking a deep breath.  When he refocused on her, his eyes hardened into something wild. Something feral.  Something passionate.  And a little scary.
“Blame it on the stars,” was all he said before his mouth captured hers again.  This kiss was different from the first.  Where the first one was tentative and exploratory, this kiss was devouring.  It was like he’d gotten a taste of nirvana and craved more.  It was heady, the way his tongue was mating with hers in a fiery kiss that was quickly undoing her cell by cell.  Her last coherent thought was that Simon was going to kill her.

“How cold is it supposed to get?”

“Not too cold.  Fifties?”

“You should have told me to bring more clothes.”

“I packed some for you.”  He grinned at her outraged expression.

“You had clothes for me and let me parade around in that blanket all day?”

Flabbergasted, she watched heat creep into his face as he ducked his head, his grin turning sheepish.  “A guy can hope.”

“Hope for what?”  Heart pounding, she saw the evidence of his attraction as he avoided her gaze.  Was he actually as attracted to her as she was to him?  Why all the avoidance then?  It would certainly make their time together pass faster.  At least less awkwardly.  “Hope for what, Ryan?”

He looked up at her, the flush in his face making his complexion look ruddy.  Hot as hell.  She couldn’t stop herself.  Krista had never thrown herself at a man the way she was compelled to do with Ryan, but the way he looked at her—like he could devour her any second—made any semblance of decorum fly out the window… er… shelter.

Licking her lips, she watched as Ryan froze, every muscle in his body tensing up.  There wasn’t much space between them, but she closed it as she crawled into his lap, feeling a devilish grin on her face.  She could feel his arousal press against her core, and she automatically ground against it, eliciting a moan from him.
She’d never been this way with a man before.  His hands came up to grip her hips, as if to stop her, but his eyes told her to keep going.  He looked helpless to stop his desires and seemed on the verge of giving in to them.

“Hope for what, Ryan?” she repeated in a whisper before leaning forward.  She knew he wanted this almost as badly as she did.

“Don’t…” he breathed at her, leaning his forehead against hers.
Her pussy was so hot and wet; she couldn’t believe he was stopping.  He was hard and ready.  She rocked against him to illustrate.

“Don’t what?  You want this, don’t you?”  A shot of sobering indecisiveness rankled her.  “Or is this all one-sided?”  She backpedaled, crawling out of his lap and onto her pile of leaves.

“Fuck,” Ryan muttered under his breath.  “Of course I want it, Krista.  Like nothing I’ve ever wanted before.”  His voice was hoarse and gritty.  He adjusted the bulge in his pants, but didn’t come any closer, and Krista felt the sting of rejection all over again.  “You’re fucking beautiful.  And classy.  And perfect.”  He let out a whoosh of air she felt across the shelter.  “But I know that if we do anything, I’ll want to spend every day buried inside that sweet pussy and I won’t be able to protect you with a distraction like that.”  He stood, ducking in the low-ceilinged structure.  “I need to protect you.”  Without another word, he stalked out of the structure, into the rain.

Krista shivered in the sudden cold of the shelter.  The temperature hadn’t dropped physically, but the absence of Ryan left a definite chill against her heated skin.  What the fuck had just happened?  She had no doubt he wanted her.

EXCERPT

She started out watching the movie on the opposite end of the couch, but pretty soon she found herself flush against him, needing to feel human contact. They shared her blanket, but it wasn’t a sexual thing. It was comforting to feel his warmth pressed against her body. To her delight, he jumped when she did, but when she looked at his face to see if he looked scared, he showed very little emotion. Only his eyes held the fear that she knew her entire face was projecting. At some point, one of his arms crawled around her shoulders and he pulled her close to him. At another point, she reached for his other hand, holding it to her chest and squeezing it when she closed her eyes against the soggy girl in the movie. His warmth and comfort was something she had never experienced, though had often wished for. She tried not to dwell on that thought too much. In Renae’s experience, dwelling on the positive was inevitably a mistake. It always set her up for a let-down. After it was over, Jason let out a pent up breath. “I forgot how freaky that damn movie was.” “Not me, I remembered. I won’t be sleeping tonight.” She laughed nervously and unfolded herself from the ball she’d curled up into on the couch, standing and stretching. Jason stood too. “I guess I should go. As much as I would like to stay… I don’t think you want a repeat performance.” He sounded hurt, and she wanted to reassure him. He’d been so agreeable all night, and they’d gotten along so well. Renae touched his arm. “It’s not that I don’t want that, Jason, I do. As long as we’re talking about that amazing night we shared.” She watched as he nodded. “But I was really drunk that night, and I want a real relationship with you. Not like a marriage or anything, but I don’t want something based on great sex. Does that make sense?” He nodded soberly, waited a beat, then his face cracked into that grin that made Renae willing to do anything. “Great, huh?” She laughed. “Stud-muffin caliber sex.” He stilled, a perplexed expression on his face. “I don’t know what that means.” She answered with a shrug, secretly amused by his confusion. “But sex in the future is still on the table, right?” Renae nodded. “Yes, I think so.” It was something she’d considered, repeatedly. Especially at night when she was supposed to be sleeping. “Good.” He lowered his head to hers and kissed her. It was such a sweet and tender kiss, considering they’d just been talking about how great the sex between them was, that Renae was caught off guard. She’d been preparing for a conquering kiss of triumph, since she’d just agreed they might have sex someday. But this kiss was a consuming kiss, his warm lips softly nibbled on her lips and when she opened, he slowly swept his tongue inside, softly overwhelming her senses, until yet again she was a trembling mass of nerves. He seemed to sense it, and his hand came to her lower back where he supported her. He didn’t pull her closer, or press himself against her, he just held her, kissing her softly. When his other hand reached for her face, she couldn’t stop herself from melting into him. Her own hands tugged on his hair, adjusting the position of his face so she could deepen the kiss. As much as she loved the tender kiss, Renae wanted more. She whimpered into his mouth as she pulled his hair, and something seemed to snap inside Jason. He hauled her against his body and a primal sound came from the back of his throat. He trailed kisses across her cheek and down her neck, whispering about her smell and the things she did to him. “No control around you… so fucking perfect… want more.” She pulled his head back up to her face to keep kissing him and wrapped one arm around his neck while her other hand snaked down his chest. She felt like a volcano had erupted inside her and her veins were filling with molten lava. The only thing to quench it was Jason.

Featured Interview With Anne Conley Author of The Four Winds Series

Wow by a chance blogger request for a promo, I have got to meet Anne, and would love to share my Interview that I did with her, with you.

Enjoy

Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m a domestic engineer J who does constant battle with laundry, dust, and my laptop.  I used to teach high school English, until I realized teenagers were sucking my soul out slowly.  So I quit teaching to stay home and raise my children.  It’s been difficult, and we’ve had to make some choices that don’t mesh with others’, but we’re happy here in our own little proverbial slice of heaven.

How did you become a writer, and did you always want to write?

I’ve written in journals almost my entire life.  When I got the kindle app on my phone and saw some of the stuff that was being published, I decided to write something I would like to read.  It started as a fantasy of mine, but my husband was so encouraging, I ran with it.

How do you hope your readers react to the stories you write?

I hope my readers find something they can relate to in my stories.  I try to write about real people with real problems.  My characters are in their thirties and forties, with real jobs.  There aren’t any CEOs in my books, nobody wears Jimmy Choos, or designer anything for that matter, yet.  I hope readers can see that normal people can find love too.  Although, my idea of normal may not be the same as anyone else’s.

What responses to your writing have affected you the most and why?

I’m not going to lie and say negative reviews don’t affect me, because they do.  But the responses that have affected me the most have been personal responses from readers who have made the effort to reach out to me personally to tell me they loved some aspect of one of my stories.  It’s a bit of validation for why I write what I do.

Other than writing great stories, what other goals do you have for your life?

Mostly, just to see my family healthy and happy.  I’m trying to support them all right now, and it’s hard, but I would like to get to a place where I can spend more time with them and provide a comfortable living for everyone.  I’ve worked so many types of jobs (customer service rep, retail, teaching, outside sales, goat farming), and this is the only career choice I’ve made that I loved.  I would like to be able to support my family with it.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I read an insane amount of books, mostly romance.  I also like to spend time outdoors with my husband and kids.  We live on a pretty big piece of property, and walks in the pasture are always calming.

What can you tell us about your latest works?

Right now, I’m trying to finish up Wrecked, my latest Story of Serendipity.  Here’s a rough blurb…

Renae has just sent her daughter off to college and is looking forward to living a life for herself for once, only she gets drunk one night and loses all inhibitions.  When she turns forty-five, she finds herself pregnant and having to re-think her plans for her life.  Do those plans include the baby’s father?  Should they?

Jason has been just existing in Houston, coming up to Serendipity to check on his aging father when necessary.  When his dad’s dementia seems like it’s going to require more than long distance care, he makes the move.  But the woman he nearly ran into with his motorcycle is always on his mind, and she won’t let him inside her walls.

What stories can your fans expect from you in the days ahead?

I’m working on the fourth instalment of my Four Winds PNR series.  It’s about Michael, the archangel of war, and is proving to be HOT.  And it looks like Damien may get his own book eventually, though I’m not sure when.

The next Story of Serendipity will touch on some Human Trafficking issues, much like Hot Mess did with AIDs.  It’s a risky move, but a topic I feel needs to be explored in today’s culture.

After those, I have a dystopian steampunk rambling around in my head, but not sure if it’s going to ever see the light of day, and a Historical Romance about the women left behind during the American Civil War is begging to be written.

What would you like to say to your fans in New Zealand and others worldwide?

Wow.  It’s insane that anyone in New Zealand knows who I am, let alone even read my books.  It’s difficult to think globally when you live in a tiny slice of the world that is so isolated like mine.  I guess I would say, thank you, and keep reading.  If you like my stories, tell your friends, leave a review, drop me a line, so I can listen to it inside my head in a New Zealand accent instead of my own Texas twang.

Do you have any parting words?

Thanks for having me, Trina.  It’s been great!  Check out my website/blog, where you can sign up for periodical newsletters, see the books I’ve written, and meet great new authors.  www.anneconley.com
