So Rebecca tell us a little about yourself.

I am a wife and designer currently living in the Northeastern United States. I was a former Sales Manager for a tourist magazine, and for many years prior, I did Marketing for a jewelry company, and later a fine wine distributor.

How did you become a writer, and did you always want to write?

About fifteen years ago, I started writing my first romance novel, Uncorked just to purely entertain myself. I never saw myself as a writer but fifteen years later, I came across the file on my computer and decided this was a project I needed to complete. I needed to finish what I had started.

The funny thing is that so much had changed from when I stated writing this book. The technology, the times, in many ways the culture… I had to rewrite many details to get the book up with the times. Pagers became cell phones, wallet photos became cell phones loaded with impromptu taken photos, etc. After proudly completing it, I got the guts to send my baby out to someone who had written books and knew so much more than I about the business of writing a book. The thought was she would just edit it; however, I got loads more than I bargained for...

My first review was horrible.  It took me a day and a half to recover from her critique. Then got up, dusted off my butt and decided I could approach this in two ways: Give-up and let the file occupy space on my hard drive, or take both the negative, and the positive comments and start over. She became my mentor, told me what worked, what I did well, and what I needed to work on.

In a matter of months under her guidance, I ate, slept, and breathed Uncorked. I would lie in bed for hours at night thinking about how the plot would twist and turn.  There were many nights where I did not sleep at all because I was so eager to get my thoughts put on paper.

It’s amazing how much information is available on the World Wide Web. From reading, to watching videos, to interviewing individuals.   I’d sit up for hours researching everything from the law to exotic locations, culture and crime and jobs to medical diseases. I took the time to research how difficult situations in one’s life shape their psyche, how they interact with others, how they form relationships.  While this book is fiction, the issues the characters deal with are very real.

In the end, I produced a book that I am proud of. I realized that I enjoy the process of writing, from thinking of creative ways to use my words, to doing the necessary research. This process made me mostly discover something about myself. I enjoy creating stories that take me into a different world other my own— A world I hope others will enjoy as well.

The story was published in February of 2013. My second novel Love, Lies & The D.A. was released on Tuesday, February 18, 2014.

How do you hope your readers react to the stories you write?

I want readers to feel what my characters feel, I want readers to laugh with my characters and cry when the do. I want them to go through the myriad of emotions—good and bad that the characters experience in the book.

What responses to your writing have affected you the most and why?

There are no words to explain when you hear from a reader and you, as the author feel that they really got your book. Most responses at the very least will make you smile, some may make you laugh, others may even anger you. However… every once in a while, a review might come in, or a letter might appear in your inbox with the words from a reader who understood your every word, and your every choice and your every decision in a storyline. They are usually filled with immense praise. I love writing; however, those are the readers I continue writing for. Those types of responses give you the zeal, drive and the motivation (if you need it) to strive ahead.

I embrace positive feedback and try to learn from the negative, but I’ve come to realize that most negative critique is just that—negative. As a writer, I can take critique, after I wrote my first book the review I learned from the most was a 3-Star review. Not a great review… but what I was able to learn from that blogger helped me grow in ways unimaginable. What she said to me helped me understand what worked with my book, and what I need to continue working on. Since then, few negative reviews have been that constructive, I try to sometimes see past the snarky and sarcastic comments to see if I could learn anything from them.

I realise I will never be able to make every reader love my books, but I always try to learn something from the way people respond to them—negative or positive.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

LOL. What spare time? When I’m not writing, I’m promoting my novel, when I’m not promoting my work or writing I love spending time with my husband.  I love design—everything—graphic, interior, event etc. If I’m not writing, promoting, or spending time with my hubby, I’ll be designing something J

What can you tell us about your latest works?

My latest novel Love, Lies & The D.A. is about a District Attorney who falls in love with the suspect in a high profile felony case that he’s due to preside over. In addition, his father is the lawyer representing her in the case.

While this book is a romance novel, it also has very strong elements of mystery, crime and suspense.

What stories can your fans expect from you in the days ahead?

More like months ahead… J There’s not too much to report right now. I’m starting to think of ideas for my next book, and I’ve started doing some research but the storyline is not complete. Renders can expect more contemporary romance with elements of suspense.

What would you like to say to your fans in New Zealand and others worldwide?

Thank you! Thank you for the emails, your positive feedback and your kind wishes.
Some of my greatest fans are from your side of the world. I do not ever want any of my fans to feel like they’ve been forgotten. Whether it be through giveaways, author takeovers etc. I’m always mindful to include my fans from all over the world. No one is of any less importance because of geography J

Do you have any parting words?

Thank you Trina for inviting me to do this interview. It was wonderful sharing my thoughts with you. Thank you for featuring me, and my novel Love, Lies & The D.A. I greatly appreciate your support. Best wishes to you and yours.
