It's all fun and games until egos get hurt. After a year of a seemingly happily-ever-after, Troy Babilonia throws a curve ball that smacks Larson Blackburn right in the head. When Troy's debut novel, "Bridge to Lonely," threatens to overshadow Larson's own success, inviting a past shadow into the light of their present, the two alphas must learn to adjust.
"Bridge to Lonely" has garnered an unexpected success both in the literary world and in the film industry, forcing Larson to accept that he is not the only successful author in the building. Review Tour For Tina DC Hayes's Queen Of Schnapps

Queen of Schnapps Tour Banner1 Queen of Schnapps - Tina DC Hayes- BISON PUBLISHING

As people read Queen of Schnapps, they’ll keep stopping to say, “What?  Did that really just happen?!”  Judith’s schemes are so bizarre, readers will wake up laughing at their nightmares after they finish this book.

77003-synopsis
To say Judith Webster is quirky would be an understatement . . . turns out she’s an alcoholic serial killer hell-bent on getting everything her heart desires.

She hates her job at Gas 'N Go, but works to fund life's necessities: gambling, eBay, and her schnapps collection. When a hunky Irish actor joins the cast of her favorite soap opera, Judith’s new goal in life is to meet and marry Evan Gallagher. Her husband will just have to deal with it.

Nobody would ever guess Judith is insane, that she duct tapes her cat inside a goldfish-shaped bed from hell, or how mad she gets when Harry Qualls struts down the street with his mailman purse. Her biggest secret, however, is the way she deals with people stupid enough to piss her off. On her shit list is a dangerous place to be, but she’s taking names.

She hasn’t been held accountable for her crimes before, but a girl can never be too careful.

Exclusive First Chapter:

ONE

"I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity."
~Edgar Allan Poe
Behind the counter at Gas 'N Go, I sat bored to death watching the clock slowly tick down the minutes until my shift would finally be over. Come on five a.m. The past two months working here had sucked, and I hate being a clerk. At least it isn't quite as bad as my last job selling donuts to a bunch of damn early birds who expected me to smile and be polite at the ass crack of dawn.
The electronic device on the door chimed. Frank Wilkes gave me a quick once over on the way to his station behind the counter, then shook his head. "You know Susan's gonna have a shit fit when she catches you without that name tag again."
"If she was that worried about it, she should've got one with my actual name on it." I looked up at him from my stool as I reached under the counter for a small plastic rectangle. "This," I continued, pointing to the white letters printed on the tacky blue background, "clearly does not say Judith Webster, so I have no intention of pinning someone else's crap to my shirt. Susan can stick it up her ass, or she can find somebody named Judy and stick it up hers." I tossed the cheap badge back onto the cluttered shelf hoping to never again set eyes on the stupid thing. "What are you laughing at?"
"Don't get mad, but it cracks me up when you get all pissed off. You make these funny faces and your eyes nearly pop out of your head, but it's kind of cute."
"Now Frank, you know I'm married so stop with the compliments." I held one hand up, palm facing him. Not that I don't like being called cute, but I'd never think about cheating with a   co-worker. "I told you—"
"I know, we had that talk last week when I pointed out that you had a price sticker stuck to the seat of your pants." Frank grinned like a moron. "Settle down, I didn't mean anything like that. Sometimes I can't tell when you're joking." He winked, but then rubbed his eye. Good thing he caught himself or I'd have been all over him for making another pass at me. "Hey, at least I know better than to call you the wrong name."
"Thanks, Frank, I appreciate that."
I like my name. Judith. It sounds sophisticated and worldly. My biggest pet peeve is having stupid people adulterate it to some dippy nickname like Judy, or worse yet, Jude, both of which I refuse to answer to. If Ed McMahon's ghost ever rang my doorbell with a ginormous check made out to Judy Webster, I'd slam the door in his face. I've explained it to my boss a million and one times, but still, Susan keeps on calling me Judy—possibly to get a rise out of me since I'm apparently so damn adorable when I'm pissed off. No way in hell I’m wearing that fucking plastic tag.
I punched my time card, yelled "See ya tomorrow, Frank," and helped myself to a Heath bar on the way out of the convenience store. The two tones of the chime sounded like a robotic donkey as the door closed behind me.
I wished it was later in the day when I drove past Corkers, my favorite liquor store, on the way home. Some ridiculous law prohibited the sale of alcohol before eight o'clock in the morning, but I had a pretty strong hankering for a nice mind-numbing drink. Maybe I could find something in the back of the kitchen cabinet to hold me over.
The beautiful autumn morning made me decide to drive through Atkinson Park, located just a few miles from the Gas 'N Go in the heart of Henderson, Kentucky. Trees along the curving pavement arched into a canopy overhead as I drove my blue Buick through a red, gold, and brown confetti of leaves. I parked near the picnic area to eat the candy bar before I started the thirty-minute drive home, the windows down to let in the cool breeze as sunrise blended into the bluing sky.
The Ohio River shimmered below the twin bridges as I drove into the sprawling city of Evansville, Indiana and my upper-middle-class neighborhood on the far side of town. The apple-red front door I painted last Labor Day complemented the tan siding and dark green shutters.
Greg was sound asleep in bed when I got home. His alarm usually went off at six thirty so he had a few more minutes left to snooze.
Our schedules kept us apart most of the time. Greg worked day shift at a factory in town so with me working nights, it was rare for us both to have a whole day to spend together. We did good to have a couple of hours in the evening home at the same time, which we usually spent eating supper in front of the television. We'd been married for sixteen years, so there really wasn't anything all that exciting left to talk about.
I went straight to the kitchen to make breakfast. My mother-in-law would throw up if she saw the stack of unwashed pans and crusty plates in the sink or the filthy drinking glasses on the countertop. The refrigerator, on the other hand, was immaculate. I’d spent the previous Saturday throwing out fuzzy green fruit and veggies and oozing containers of leftover take-out, then scrubbed the shelves with bleach and wiped down all the condiments before I put them back on the shelves. In alphabetical order, of course.
I dropped a couple cherry pop tarts in the toaster for Greg before taking my bacon and eggs to the living room. My black and white cat, drawn by the smell of food, jumped up on the sofa to purr for a bite of my breakfast. I clicked the remote a few times, then cooed down at my kitty. "Good morning, Miss Poopsie. Would you like some of Mama's bacon?" She gobbled up the crispy pieces I put on the sofa cushion along with some scrambled egg bits. "Did you miss me while I was gone, slaving away at that stupid job?" She licked the plate clean after I finished eating.
The cat nuzzled my cheek as I picked her up and headed toward the bedroom. The alarm had gone off a few minutes before so I wasn't surprised to meet Greg on his way to the kitchen.
"Morning, Judith," he said, giving me a quick peck on the cheek as we brushed past each other in the narrow hall. "You make coffee yet?"
"Nope, caffeine would just keep me awake. See ya tonight. Don't work too hard." I went to bed, tucking myself in at about same time Greg pushed the lever to start his pop tarts toasting. Poopsie rested on a satin pillow beside me. Aliens are afraid of cats, so I had no reason to worry about an unwanted anal probe with her purring away.

INTERVIEW:
How did you come up with the idea for this story?
I just sort of ran with the idea of a serial killer nobody in their right mind would ever suspect. You would not believe how much fun I had playing with this alcoholic, soap opera addicted schnapps aficionado.
Where do you find your inspiration?
Everywhere. Stories can be inspired from dreams, random thoughts, what-ifs, even the mood a song on the radio puts me in.
Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
Promos. It’s hard to make enough time to promote my books while I’m writing the next one. What are your current projects?
I’m working on the next Rock Candy Romantic Suspense novel and planning a new series.
Tell us about your first book. What would readers find different about the first one and your most recent published work?
The first book I wrote was Nefarious, and my latest release is Queen of Schnapps.  Hmmmm, let me see. Well, they both have highly intelligent criminal minds at play, but while Nefarious revolves around the main character overcoming domestic violence before she can surrender to true love, Queen of Schnapps deals more with the stalker mentality of someone dead set on getting what they want, no matter who stands in their way.
Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
Never underestimate anyone. Ever. The most dangerous people in the world can easily look like your fifth grade English teacher.
Does music play any type of role in your writing?
Music is a great way conjure up the right mood. “I Feel Lucky” is Judith’s theme song and they play it at her favorite casino, so I cranked it up while I wrote her roulette scenes.
What books have influenced your life most?
Anything by my three favorite authors: Stephen King, Jude Deveraux, and Dean Koontz.
Can you share a little of your current work with us?
Okay, Briella thought, I definitely heard that wrong.  Then Mrs. Hollingsworth took her hand, and wouldn't release it when Bree tried to pull it away.  What the hell is going on here?
There wasn’t nearly enough champagne in her system for a good buzz, so she drained the glass and hoped to feel some of its effects after this weird turn of events.  The room was full of whoops and well wishes, but she didn't see any cameras.  If Dillon's punking me, I'm so going to kick his ass.
"What is going-"
Mrs. Hollingsworth interrupted her with a hug, and whispered into the ear farthest away from the guests. "Don't say a word, my dear.  I'll explain everything in a moment."
"But I don't even know-"
"Not a word until we're seated in the other room."  She leaned back to look into Briella's eyes, their noses only inches apart.  "There's a letter from your Grandpa Butch.  He left it with my lawyer before he died."
Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
Thank you! I appreciate you reading what the voices in my head tell me to write, and no, I’m not really that warped . . .  most of the time.  Well, it depends on who you ask.
How can readers discover more about you and your work?
They can check out my website, my facebook page, and tweet me.
Do you have a special time to write? How is your day structured writing-wise?
Ideally, I like to write three hours a day. Right now, my baby girl dictates when that time is, usually while she takes a nap, after she’s in bed for the night, or when she allows me to use the computer as she plays next to me or sits in my lap. Early mornings are good too.
Why did you choose to write [genre] stories?
I read every genre imaginable, so it’s no surprise I don’t pigeon hole my work. I write mostly sassy Southern suspense, which includes romance, cozy mysteries, and humor.
What is for you the perfect book hero?
There isn’t one. Nobody is perfect, and who wants a flawless hero anyway? I like characters who surprise me, who aren’t what they first appear to be.
When you start a book, do you already have the whole story in your head or is it built progressively?
I plan the hell out of it before I write the first word. Planning is actually one of my favorite parts of the process. I let my wild ideas flow into character sketches, outlines, and plot twists. When things take an unexpected turn after I start writing, I go with it. Outlines are made to be tweaked.
When and why did you begin writing?
I can’t remember a time when I didn’t make up stories in my head. My parents read to me from a very early age, and I was lucky enough to hang out with grandparents and great-grandparents growing up; there was nothing better than listening to them tell me stories about their lives and things that happened to them and people they knew. And my family is responsible for my twisted sense of humor.
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
Always. I remember writing stories and poems before I could ride a bicycle.
List three books you have recently read and would recommend.
Tell us something that people would be surprised you know how to do.
I know how to train dogs in obedience and agility, can speak a little basic Cherokee, and I’m double-jointed.
Will you write more about these characters?
No, or at least I don’t plan to. But if Judith starts whispering ideas in my ear again, who knows. I sure don’t want to end up on her shit list.

Chapter One

Ray
I had just finished putting the finishing touches on my makeup when I glanced at the time. “Shit, I’m late again!” I murmured to myself as I darted out of the bathroom and into my bedroom. Liam had kept me up all night, and we were running behind. I grabbed my scrubs and quickly threw them on followed by my shoes. One down, one to go.
I then scurried toward Liam’s room, trying not to trip over all the toys that cluttered the house. I found him drawing when I entered his room. He was almost ready with his blue and white striped shirt and black jeans but no shoes. He looked up at me and smiled. “Can we go now, Mommy?”
“Yeah, baby, we can go. Grab your backpack, and pack your toys.”
He shot up from his drawing desk and hurried out of the room while I began the search for his shoes. God, there toys everywhere. It’s going to take a miracle to find these shoes. I started under his bed but had no luck. Frustrated, I started picking up his toys, searching under everything. After searching the room frantically for ten minutes, I finally found them in his toy box in the closet.
“Bingo,” I yelled as I emerged from Liam’s closet with the shoes in hand, smiling from ear to ear. Liam came waltzing in a few seconds later with his backpack in hand, zipping it up and throwing it over his shoulder.
“Did you get the toys you wanted to take with you? You’re going to be gone for two days at Nanny’s,” I asked him as I ushered him to sit down so I could help him put on his shoes.
He looked up at me and made a face as if I had asked the most ridiculous question he’d ever heard. “Duh, Mom, I’m not leaving without all of my favorite toys,” he responded.
Finally leaving, we set out toward my beautiful, candy-apple-red, 1969 Ford Boss 429 Mustang. I had always had a thing for muscle cars. I loved my car almost as much as I loved my son; it was my second baby. Even though I am a woman, I could have told you a lot more about cars than most men.
Liam got in the back seat and climbed into his car seat. I pulled my seat back so I could buckle him in. The one thing I disliked about my car was the fact that it only had two doors instead of four, but I guess you had to deal with something you disliked to get what you wanted. And boy, did I want that car.
While driving down the highway that stretched for miles, my mind drifted to my mother. Why she came to mind, I couldn’t tell you, but every so often she would make an appearance in my head.
My mom had skipped out on my brothers and me a few years before, not that I complained since she was a horrible mother. She never gave a rat’s ass about us. She never physically abused us, but physical abuse was not the only way to leave scars.
Nanny practically raised the four of us. She had always favored me, because I was the baby of her grandchildren and the only girl. I had three older brothers: Michael, Matthew, and Bryan. Michael is the oldest at 36; Matt at 34; Bryan at 32; and myself at 29-almost-30.
Our dad was around till Michael turned two, but only ever came around if Mom was looking for a booty call. That was how the rest of us were born. Michael didn’t remember him. If he did, he had never talked about him before and none of us asked. We all looked alike, with blonde hair that had a slight wave to it and hazel eyes. Michael was a police officer. Matt a boxer, and Bryan a defense attorney. I was a doctor at the local hospital. I guess you could say that the lifestyles we had when we were younger played a part in our jobs. Go figure.
Mom never worried about putting food on the table for us—she was more concerned about where and how she was getting her next fix. None of us ever wanted to have to continue living like we had as children, so we shot high in our careers. I loved my job to death and wouldn’t trade it for anything.
I pulled into Nanny’s driveway and hurried Liam out of the car. My shift was just about to start, and I still had to drive to the hospital. When she opened the door, Liam darted inside, nearly knocking over Nanny. She was one of the most beautiful women I had ever seen. She had long black hair and the warmest brown eyes that just invited you in. She had a little bit of weight to her, but she didn’t let that stop her. She wore her weight well. She had laugh lines around the corner of her eyes and the corners of her mouth, giving away her age. She was an amazing woman, and I loved her dearly.
“Thanks so much for watching Liam for me. I’ll be sure to check in on you guys as much as I can,” I said to her before making my way toward my car. She nodded and waved as I jumped in and started the engine, which of course roared. Glancing at the dashboard, I noticed that I was ten minutes late.
“Shit, shit, shit,” I mumbled to myself as I peeled out of the driveway and headed off to work. It was going to be one hell of a day, especially since I was scheduled to work all night and half a shift the next day.

INTERVIEW

How did you come up with the idea for this story?
It’s funny, cause I’m not even sure. I just woke up one day and had the entire first chapter written out in my mind. Although, I ended up scraping that chapter and starting over.

Where do you find your inspiration?
My Nanny, who was like a mother, my kids and my husband. They keep me inspired on a daily basis.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
Research! I could spend HOURS researching everything that I need for my book. It’s crazy how much you need to know BEFORE you even begin to write.

What are your current projects?
I’m currently working on the third book in the Intertwined Seduction series, and a new novel that will be in an anthology, which may also be the start to another series.

Tell us about your first book. What would readers find different about the first one and your most recent published work?
I feel like, in my opinion, that my writing grew. I reached a new level of writing in the first book versus the second.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
No matter how tough life gets, keep going. Eventually things work out for the better.

Does music play any type of role in your writing?
Sometimes. If I’m distracted, then I turn on music and it helps me focus on writing.

What books have influenced your life most?
Any Kristen Ashley novel, Stephen King.

Are there any new authors that have grasp your interest?
Alex Grayson and Anna Paige

Can you share a little of your current work with us?
“The buzzing in my ear grows increasingly louder as the massive crowd screams. Bouncing on the balls of my feet, I try to ignore the noise. I need to focus. I’m back in the ring, defending my title against Tank. A large, bull-looking fighter. His name describes him perfectly.
I’m very confident in my fighting abilities. I know I could kick Tank’s ass, but I also know he could kick mine. Any great fighter knows that while is very good, so are other fighters. You should never be stupid enough to assume you are the best. Going into a fight this way will get you knocked out. I learned this lesson the hard way.”

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
Thank you so much for all of your support, though I may not show it on a daily basis, I truly appreciate it.

How can readers discover more about you and your work?
Social media. I am huge on social media and you can find me there at pretty much any time.

Do you have a special time to write? How is your day structured writing-wise?
My nights are spent writing. I have a 5 year old, 3 year old, and a newborn so at night is when I get the most peace to be able to write.

Why did you choose to write [genre] stories?
I love romance and I love suspense and mystery. It was natural for me to put them together.

What is for you the perfect book hero?
The perfect blend between a total sweetheart and an asshole. He can be too much of an asshole, but I love the quality of a little bit of assholeary.

When you start a book, do you already have the whole story in your head or is it built progressively?
I usually only have the first chapter planned out, and the rest is built progressively as I write.

When and why did you begin writing?
I began writing when I was about 10 years old, but at the time it was just poems. And I started writing because I was going through a lot of stuff at home, and it was a much needed outlet.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?
When I published my first book, The Lucky Bullet, in 2014.

List three books you have recently read and would recommend.
Broken Ground by Anna Paige, Unveil Me by Alex Grayson, and Hold On by Kristen Ashley

Tell us something that people would be surprised you know how to do.
Lol, I can wiggle my nose like a bunny and move my ears without touching them.

Will you write more about these characters?
Mace and Ray’s story is done, but you will see more of them in other books in the Intertwined Seduction series.

April 22, 2002
“Happy birthday!”
My friends shouted as I rounded the corner of Amy’s house. My closest friends and their families were all gathered around the pool. There were also a couple of people that I didn’t know standing among them. I smiled at them with the biggest grin and made my way past the BBQ containing hamburgers and hot dogs being manned by Shane. Shane was Amy’s husband and a friend of mine as well; we all went to school together throughout middle and high school.
Amy made a beeline for me, but it wasn’t me that she was after. My two-year-old daughter, Lindsey, was attached to my hip. When she saw Amy, her little arms reached out for her and she wiggled until Amy took her from me. Amy planted kisses on Lindsey’s cheeks while making loud smacking sounds. Lindsey’s brown curls danced around her head as she tried to dodge Amy’s onslaught of kisses.
“Your eyes are like little stars, Linds,” Amy cooed to her. And they were. She had so much gold in them that you wouldn’t know—unless you were really up close—that they were a mix of green, gold, and brown.
Amy walked over to me and gave me a one-armed hug.
“Happy birthday, Anna.”
“Thanks. You guys didn’t have to do all of this for me,” I told her, even though I really appreciated it.
“Girl, you only turn twenty-nine once, and it is your last one in your twenties. Next year, you will be considered old.” She laughed as I swatted at her free arm.
I mingled with all of my friends that had gathered, catching up with some of them, just shooting the breeze with others. I noticed a really nice looking man over by the pool talking to Kolby, Shane’s brother. I had no idea who he was but his baby-blues were extremely piercing.
He had short, brown hair, almost buzzed at the sides, a little longer on top. His arm and leg muscles were well-defined and bulged with every movement. He was wearing a pair of swim trunks, so I had a great view that left nothing about his abs to the imagination. Mystery Man had a nice six-pack going on, but it was the tribal tattoo on his rib cage that caught my attention. I would love to see that up close.
When Shane announced that it was time to eat, I knew I had to stop my ogling. Everyone filed over to the food. You would have thought none of them had eaten all week as fast as they moved. I fixed Lindsey and myself a plate and found an open spot at the end of the table Shane had set up in the yard. Mystery Man took a seat across from me. I wasn’t sure if it was just me, but I thought it just got hotter out there.
“Hi, I’m Jacob Caulder,” he said as he extended his hand toward me.
“Hi, Anna Mitchell. This is my daughter, Lindsey,” I said, placing my hand in his for a friendly shake. Jacob squeezed my hand ever-so-slightly, or maybe I imagined it, before releasing it.
“Happy birthday,” he told me.
“Thank you,” I replied with a smile.
Jacob and I talked while we ate. Just some friendly conversation. I learned he was single, and I wondered how he hadn’t been snatched up yet. Someone that good looking you wouldn’t think would be single. Must have been my lucky day. Jacob worked as a correctional officer at one of Alabama’s maximum security prisons in Birmingham. That intrigued me enough to ask him about it.
“Isn’t that a pretty dangerous job?” I inquired.
“It can be. There are a lot of fights that break out. People carrying shanks and other weapons. Mostly, they tend to use them on each other instead of the guards. There are times, though, it gets out of hand and a guard gets injured,” he explained.
“Wow, that’s pretty intense. I am not sure I could handle that all day, every day.”
We finished eating and carried on our light conversation about things we liked and disliked. I was finding that we had a lot in common and conversation came very easy with Jacob. I think this has been one of the best birthdays I have ever had. So far.
The shade trees created a nice umbrella, blocking the sun’s rays. Only a few high clouds were floating in the otherwise blue sky. A gentle breeze helped take away the sting from the heat of the sun. Right then, we all enjoy the good food, good company, and small talk between friends.
After dinner, everyone mingled around or swam. A couple of the guys were playing a game of horseshoes. The sound of metal hitting metal, followed by hooting and hollering, echoed throughout the yard.
“AA, come join us in the pool,” Shane yelled at me. He called Amy and me, AA, for Amy and Anna. There was another reason behind his nickname, and I reminded him that we are not quitters, all of the time. I said all of the time because both Amy and I did quit once. Back in college, the guys were playing beer pong and Amy and I had joined in. Needless to say, the toilet had become our best friend halfway through the game. Yes, we quit, and neither of us have touched another drink since.
I took Lindsey inside, changed her into her swimsuit, and put her floaties on her arms. We stayed in the shallow end of the pool. Lindsey loved the water, and she was having a good time splashing water in Shane’s face. Shane had always been great with kids, but he and Amy had a special bond with Lindsey. They had been there for Lindsey and me. Lindsey’s dad and I couldn’t make our relationship work. He still saw her when he could, but his job kept him traveling, so it was hard for him to find the time. Shane had pretty much filled that role in Lindsey’s life.
When the sun was almost set and the light had faded, we headed into the house to just hang out and watch a movie. Lindsey and I were staying the night so I didn’t have to make the drive home in the dark. I took Lindsey into our room and got her out of her wet swimsuit and into her pajamas. Her little eyes were already half-closed, wore out from her swimming. I rocked her in my arms until she fell asleep before I laid her down on the bed, tucked her in, and kissed her cheek.
“I love you, Lindsey bug.” I left the lamp by the door on and the door opened as I headed back into the living room with the others for our movie.
When the movie was over, I stood and stretched my arms.
“I’m going to head to bed. Lindsey will be up early, and I will need all the energy I can muster to keep up with her. Thank you for a great birthday, everyone.” I looked around the room at all of my friends, old and new, and thought about how lucky I was to have such amazing people in my life. After saying goodnight, I made my way to the bedroom.
When I entered the room, my heart fell to my feet. I rushed over to the bed that was empty.
“Lindsey?” I called, frantically searching everywhere I could. Under the bed, inside the closet, the little cubbies under the stand the TV was sitting on. All empty. No Lindsey. “Lindsey,” I screamed.
Amy came running into the room. “What’s wrong, Anna?”
“She’s gone. She’s not in the bed. Lindsey is gone,” I yelled, throwing blankets, pulling clothes out of the drawers, moving anything I could that may have contained a hiding spot for Lindsey.
“Shane,” Amy yelled.
When Shane entered the room, he looked around at the mess. I was sure I looked crazy, but I didn’t care. My baby was gone. Tears were streaming down my face, my chest heaving with sobs. Panic had overtaken me, and I was running on fear and pure adrenaline.
“Lindsey isn’t in here. We have to find her,” Amy told Shane.
“We’ll find her. I will check the rest of the house; you girls check the other bedrooms.”
Amy wrapped her arm around my shoulder as she led me into one of the other bedrooms. We checked every place a two-year-old could hide, but still no Lindsey.
“Call 9-1-1,” I heard someone yell from somewhere else in the house. Frantically, I made my way into the living room. I saw Heather, Jeff, Gabe, and Kolby rushing outside through the sliding glass door. I followed behind them, my body on auto-pilot.
What I saw stopped me dead in my tracks. Shane was pulling my lifeless daughter from the swimming pool. Her arms and legs were limp and dangling with every movement Shane made.
“Lindsey!” I screamed. “No. No. Lindsey!”
As I tried to run to her, two strong arms wrapped around me. I try to get out of their hold, but I couldn’t. I continue to scream for my daughter until the paramedics arrived and took over. When I heard ‘CPR’ and ‘no pulse’, my legs went out from under me. The two arms holding me kept me from crumbling to the ground. I leaned into the solid chest behind me and broke.
Mentally, physically, and emotionally.
Screaming for my little girl as she was loaded on a gurney and placed in the back of the ambulance, I watched as Shane climbed into the back with her.
“I’ll take you to the hospital,” Jacob said. It was him who held me while I watched them work on my daughter.  I didn’t remember the car ride to the hospital or even making my way into the emergency room, but I would never forget the words spoken to me just moments after I arrived.
“I’m sorry. We did all we could do.”
Falling to the floor of the emergency room waiting area, I could do nothing more than cry. My heart was gone. My soul turned black with pain and left me with nothing but a huge gaping hole. I didn’t know why it happened. I didn’t understand any of it. Nothing made sense anymore. She was only two. Her life was just beginning, and it was over. A candle whose flame had burned out, never to be re-lit.
My screams and sobs bounced off of the walls, the sounds of a mother’s worse nightmare come true touching every person around me. I felt arms come around my shoulders, warm breath on my neck.
“Come on, let’s get you up off of the floor,” Jacob said, lifting me effortlessly in his strong arms. I moved willingly, not having the strength to fight him. I couldn’t speak. I felt nothing but a pain so deep and strong that it burned me like a raging fire, leaving no part of me untouched. A bottomless abyss of agony. Time was at a standstill. I was lost in a dark place where there was no beginning and no ending.
The next few days passed by in a blur. Amy and Shane had been my saving grace. When I couldn’t seem to function, when even breathing became too hard, they stepped in and took control. I knew they were hurting too; they loved Lindsey just as much as I did. They had lost her as well, yet they did what needs to be done.
Amy took care of the funeral arrangements. I couldn’t process losing her, and there was no way I was at all capable of thinking about putting her in the dark, cold ground. Even though we hadn’t said much to each other, our silence was comforting in a way. Just knowing they were there is enough.
The viewing for my Lindsey was held two days later. There were beautiful flowers surrounding her tiny casket. So many people come to see my baby girl. Lindsey looked so small lying there, her hair framing her little face. No smile, no star-like eyes to be seen, no life left in her body. The paleness of her face portrayed her as a porcelain doll, beautiful, yet unmoving.
I felt lost and abandoned standing over her. Heartbroken and angry, my grief knew no boundaries. Tears were my closest friend.
The darkness inside of me left me feeling numb. I went through the motions of daily life, but feel nothing aside from pain and heartache. Those two emotions seemed to have paired up with the numbness leaving me helpless to its power. Lindsey was my life. Everything I did revolved around her. Providing for her, taking care of her, and just loving her. Part of my life had been snuffed out, and I was not sure how to begin to recover.
Does anyone ever recover from losing their child?
I was sitting in the front row on a green, felt-covered chair. The gray clouds reflected my mood. There were no rays of sunshine to brighten the day. Just as my ray of sunshine was lying in the cherry wood box in front of me. It was so small the spray of yellow roses covered the entire top of the casket. Tears filled my eyes, blurring the sight in front of me. One by one, my pain slid down my cheeks. I felt Amy’s hand slide into mine, and I squeezed it tight, the only lifeline I had at that moment. Ricky, Lindsey’s dad, sat on my other side. His pain visible on his face. I didn’t hear what the minister said. I could only stare out into the nothingness my life was then surrounded by.
When the service was over, I accepted the condolences of those who had come to say goodbye to my baby. It was like I was a robot and someone was telling my body what to do. I didn’t remember who came by, who said what, or if I even thanked them.
“It’s time to go, Anna.”
I looked up into Amy’s tear-filled eyes. Taking in one deep breath, I stood and walked the few feet to where Lindsey laid. I placed a kiss onto my finger and pressed it against the casket.
“I love you, Lindsey. Mommy loves you so much,” I choked out.
Ricky walked up to stand beside me. He whispered to Linsdey that he loved her. He placed his arm around my shoulder, squeezing lightly, then he turned and walked away. It had all been too much for him. Knowing he didn’t take the time he should have with his daughter had left him with resounding guilt.
Walking away made it real. I was leaving my baby girl alone there. My heart, what was left of it, crumbled into irreparable pieces. Just as we reached the car, the sun peeked out through the clouds, shining a lone ray of light onto Lindsey’s final resting place. I knew then that was Lindsey’s way of telling me it was going to be all right. I just wasn’t sure I could agree.
