Release Date: June 14, 2016

Cathryn Blankenship has no desire for a season in London! Why on earth would her father want her to leave her home in Charles Town? Upon Cathryn’s steadfast refusal, Governor Blankenship is forced to assign a young lieutenant to watch over Cathryn on the journey and ensure his daughter’s appearance in London. Cathryn finds Lieutenant Jake Pennington the most aggravating, maddening man she has ever met...a man Cathryn soon admits she is in no hurry to see leave.

But fate has other plans for her in a world she is ill prepared to enter. She descends into a place where love and betrayal go hand and hand, where greed and treachery are second nature, but moreover the threat her father believes he has sent her is awaiting her arrival. When fate tears her apart from her Lieutenant, Cathryn finds herself desolate and alone. Soon, Cathryn makes fateful decisions that will send her back to her home.

A home far different than the one she left. A war rages. Soon, she discovers her life is in danger and the only one that can save her is the one who left her heartbroken.

Author's Note: This book was previously published with Whiskey Creek Press as The Judas Kiss and The Promise under the Tides of Charleston Series.

A chill was in the air. Pulling her shawl tighter around her, she stood in the night’s breeze and inhaled deeply.

Tacy hadn’t said a word. There was no need. Cathryn realized Tacy feared she was asking for trouble. She was. She had to see him.

Above her, a quarter moon sat in the cloudless sky and reflected off the still ocean water. Cathryn stared upward hoping…praying Jake would appear. Then he was there.

“I’m glad to have found you here,” he said, walking up beside her.

“I’ve been warned, Lieutenant, not to linger long in your company. Mrs. Montgomery is afraid people will begin to talk. I don’t think she wants to be held responsible for my tarnished reputation.”

“I see nothing wrong,” he said. “Your maid is within reaching distance and I imagine can hear every word we say.”

She turned abruptly right into him. His hand went around her waist. Instinctively, she looked up into his eyes.

Mesmerized, she couldn’t breathe as he reached over and caressed her face. She melted with his touch…his look. In an endless moment in time, she couldn’t take her eyes off of his. She thought he was going to kiss her, but the moment passed.

He released his grip. Her heart sank. Feeling dejected, she turned from him.

“Don’t, Cathryn. Mrs. Montgomery isn’t wrong to be concerned,” he said. “The ship is tight quarters when two feel as we do. I see you every day. You are within my reach. The ship will dock tomorrow and everything will change.”

She whipped back around. Her eyes blazing, she challenged him, “That is why you came tonight? You have come to say goodbye to me. Do not lie. I can see it in your eyes.

“Tell me…tell me, Jake. Are you are leaving me? Is that what you have come to do? To say it was nothing, only the close quarters upon a ship! How dare you! Make me want you and now back away. Don’t you tell me what I’m supposed to feel!”

“Tomorrow is a different day,” he said. “You will see how it is. I have my own responsibilities as you have yours. Remember when you first came aboard, you said you were only biding your time for a year? Now you believe you want something else. How do you know what you will feel on the morrow?”

She wanted to scream at him that she had never felt what she did when she was around him. Why did this have to change? He had told her he was only a simple lieutenant.

She didn’t care. Oh, Heavens! She had fallen hopelessly in love with him.

“So you don’t care for me,” she cried. “Don’t tell me such! I could not take those words.”

“I don’t know what I want you to take with you,” he whispered. “It is for your best if we take this no further. You will see.”

Her temper exploded. She hit his chest with her fist, over and over again. “For my best! How dare you try to tell me leaving me is for the best! How can you say such—”

She didn’t have a chance for another word. He cupped her face in his hands and his lips came down upon hers, softly at first, then harder. Trembling in his arms, her lips pulsed against his with her own desire.

Somewhere in the madness, the reason for meeting this night escaped her mind. Only being with him…in his arms with his lips upon hers mattered. He kissed her again and again, ravishing her mouth.

Gasps of pleasure escaped her. Her body was shocked at the depth of emotion he provoked within her. She was lost in his essence.

Slowly, his lips broke from hers. “See what you made me do. This is why I can’t—”

She wouldn’t let him say the word. Instead, she pleaded, “No, please, Jake, don’t leave me. Don’t tell me I won’t see you again.”

“It’s not to be, Cathryn. By God, I wish it was.”

“Don’t tell me that, Jake. Tell me what to do so we can be together.”

“I can’t ask that of you.”

She took his hand and kissed it, terrified of losing him…losing what they had before it had a chance to begin.

“Why? Tell me, Jake. Why? Can you not give me hope? This can’t be goodbye. It can’t. I would die.”

He stood in silence for a moment. His gaze fixed upon hers reflecting a longing that both suffered. He took her one last time in his arms and kissed her. Breaking from her, he caressed her face one last time, turned and walked away.

Synopsis
I have lost those who I have loved.
I have bled for those I hate.
I have lied to those who are honest.
What am I?
You're a sinner dressed in white.
You’re a ghost in the night.
You're the demons that I fight.
Who are you?
Both of us were sinners. She was hell-bent on revenge, and I was determined to let her have it. She was a beautiful sin that alone would be my damnation. And for her, I was willing to dig my own grave. She took what little pride I had left and made me look like a fool. I lusted for a taste of her darkness, for it was the same color as mine. I envied the way she was able to say no, as if she really meant it. I will endure the wrath of having her no matter the cost of my greed. But I have always been a glutton for punishment without any propensity of sloth. She became my obsession and like any other drug, she took all the pain away but brought me to a new level of low. Too bad falling in love with her brought on a different kind of hell that I wasn’t sure we would live through. We were both running from a past that was going to tear apart out future. What I thought was going to be a beautiful beginning turned out to be a torturous end.

Excerpt
I take another step closer to her, closing what little space there was left between us.  Uncrossing my arms, I reach out and grab a handful of her brown hair and yank her head back, “What the …?” She cries out wide-eyed.
I lower my head down to hers and her eyes search my face.  The smell of something sweet hits my nose and I inhale sharply.  Her eyes wide and breathing heavy.  What will he do to me?  Is what is running through her mind right now. “Do you want me to attack you like the man downstairs did, or are you gonna point it at me?” I demand keeping my voice even.  How stupid she was to let me see her up to her apartment.  She’s too trusting.  All I had to do was mention Tiffany and she forgot everything else.  Even her own safety.  This woman needs me.
She gasps and her green eyes harden as her nostrils flare. “Let go of me.” She growls, trying to pull her hair free of my fist.  I take a quick look at the gun, she still has it pointed away from me.  It’s not gonna happen.  She’s only gonna hurt herself.
“Make me.” I say with a smirk.  Let’s see what she has to work with.  Let me see how well she can fight her way out of a life or death situation.  Because I have a feeling that her friend didn’t have a chance.  But then again not many women do.  The ones who do, are just pure lucky.
She lets out of huff and then lifts her knee.  I let go of her hair and I fall to the floor like a boulder falling off a cliff.  Bent over and unable to breathe I feel as if I am about to puke on her living room floor.
She kneed me in the balls.

Cade
While I held Zoe, every nerve woke from its slumber. My heartbeat increased and a hum of energy surged through me. Just being near her was intoxicating.
I craved to kiss her lips, but I wouldn't. Not until she sought me to.
Until her body spoke to me.
"So what can you tell me?" She asked. "What's the plan?"
"The plan is you get to know me. The way all relationships develop." I released her just enough to look into her eyes. "We spend time together, and your heart will answer the rest. And when you so choose, I’m yours—heart and soul."
Although in time, she would understand that I already was.
"What's the catch? Other than giving up my life here? I need all the information if I'm going to make a decision this important."
"There’s a reason you can’t be privy to all the secrets of this life. This must be a decision based on your soul. No logic can go into choosing love."
Her eyes narrowed, and her irritation returned.
"Well in case you've missed the past millennium, people today don't just fall in love overnight. Life's not a Disney movie."
She pulled away, and I let her go.
Zoe was right. Unions in modern times were complicated. Raz said there were many variables humans took into account when choosing a mate, and Zoe, although the same soul, had different experiences during each incarnation. I couldn’t force her to love me or to choose our life together, as much as I wanted to.
Each of her lives was a lesson for me as well—in relinquishing control. All I could do was trust in her heart and our love. Trust her soul would return to me.
"Humanity is about choice. I would never force you to love me. And I would never choose my happiness over yours, but yes. I am hoping your heart will choose me."
Her breathing slowed, and her lips parted slightly, just enough to send my heart racing.
My Gemini mark began to pulsate. To burn.
I needed to kiss her.
She needed to kiss me.
After thousands of years loving Zoe, I could read her body as if it were my own.
Searching for what Raz called her tells, I first regarded her eyes. They were always the most expressive. They danced between mine and my mouth. Her breaths became shallow. A pink flush spread across her cheeks as she inched toward me, shifting nervously between her feet.
Should I try? Part of me was unsure, but my body betrayed my wits.
I’d waited twenty-one years for this moment.
I could wait no longer.
I moved toward her, inhaling her sweet scent, and rid the space between us.
Her eyes grew wider, and her lips parted. Waiting. I could hear her heart pulsing rapidly.
Her body gave her answer.
"My greatest desire is for you to find happiness." I stepped closer, picked up a long strand of her dark locks and tucked it behind her ear. Running my fingers along her jaw, I whispered across her cheek.
"You have no memory of a life before this."
I gently grasped her chin, stroked her bottom lip with my thumb, and edged toward her.
"But I've seen our life together."
I wrapped my arms around her waist, pulling her closer, our lips now fractions apart.
Her eyes never left mine, and her body trembled in my arms.
"And I will always. Choose us."
Her breath breezed across my cheek as I pressed my lips to hers. Soft. Gentle. Trembling beneath mine. The tingling sensation I’d missed so much returned, running rampant throughout my body.
I pulled back, not more than a centimeter, to gauge her response.
Her eyes remained closed, lips parted. Waiting for my return.
I brushed a kiss gently, then deeper into her.
She allowed me to explore her soft lips. They parted further still, and I edged my way in, exploring her sweet mouth.
An intense force rushed through my veins, to my chest and arms. Her life force burned within every muscle. My body that longed for her was now alive from her touch.
Zoe fell into my embrace, letting go of all the tension she'd been holding. She enfolded her arms around my neck, pressed her chest against mine, and gently tugged at my hair. Her hands ran down my cheeks, then to my shoulders and waist.
She pressed her kiss deeper into mine, soft at first, then fervently, as if this was our last.
One block at a time, her wall was crumbling—the pain replaced with a longing for our love. Soon, her memories would resurface, and I would have my Chayah back. Our souls Converged as one.
Zoe broke our kiss, pulled back and gulped a breath of air. She opened her eyes, her body still quaking in my arms. A minute passed. Her gaze drifted up, and a single tear slid down her cheek.
"It's you," she whispered.
I placed my hands on her face, held her cheeks gently, and gazed into her emerald eyes.
“It's me."

When Brian was thinking about who he would need for the mission he was assigned, he knew Trig was the first person to call. His Marine Corps brother would be there for him no matter what was needed.
The second on Brian’s short list was a guy that saved his ass in a bar in Ireland. The Cuban born, dark-brown-skinned male had stood out in the crowd. The women seemed to flock around the guy after hearing him speak his order for a set of shots, the hostess’ phone number, and a beer for the lady that was walking to the restroom. The woman’s sway of her hips had become more pronounced as the bartender snorted. At the time, Brian had shaken his head at the antics of the women and the response they had to the man. It was that response that had saved Brian’s life.
Brian and a mammoth-sized giant had gotten into a heated argument about soccer. Both had been drinking and quite possibly had downed one too many Guinnesses before arguing the same damn point. Thomas “Hounder” Madison had gotten one of the “lassies” that had been hanging on his every word to distract the big man with her “massive melons.” Those were Hounder’s words, not Brian's.
The woman walked up to the “Mass Tech,” grabbed his hand, and slapped that huge paw of his under her shirt. When she began to react to his flicking thumb, the Samoan’s attention remained on her and Hounder walked Brian right out the front door. It wasn’t until later in the evening that Brian realized he’d left the case he’d been carrying at the bar. That was a sure sign that he’d had too much to drink. Brian never left signs that he’d been present in any area, not even his home. He knew he had to rectify that oversight. Prepping himself for the fight of his life, he was surprised to learn when he'd returned to the bar that the staff of the bar were looking for a way to carry the then-dead Samoan out of the building.
It was in that moment that he understood who he was dealing with. Brian would later learn that, Hounder, the former Army Ranger, was also a consultant that handled sticky situations. “Mass Tech,” the Samoan, was one of the most wanted “pimps” in the area. He ran a prostitution ring that also used some of the women to traffic drugs in and out of the country, dead and alive. The Samoan had apparently pissed off the wrong person, or the wrong person’s daughter was initiated because the Samoan and several of his associates were coughing up dirtballs that night. Hounder, the Cuban Killer, had been called in to “take care of things,” which explained why the man was no more. The sound of Hounder’s voice brought him back to the present.
“Ghost, you have got to stop denying the truth.”
“What truth?” Brian stopped his brisk, forward pace, placed one hand over his chest and the other on Hounder’s shoulder causing the other man to stop as well. “Are you finally coming out of the closet?”
“Shut the fuck up. You know I enjoy the … canal. The boat that rides along it is not my speed.”
Isabelle’s short, dark brown hair floated around her ears as she chuckled. She brought up the rear of the group. “That boat probably only strokes the surface. No person could get a good ride out of that thing. I feel sad for your conquests. I hope that’s not the reason they call you Hounder.”
Hounder stepped a little closer to Brian before whispering, “Are you sure she’s integral to the team dynamic?”
“Oh snap, two big words for Madison, y’all. Integral and dynamic were used and in the correct manner. We have to mark a calendar.”
The jovial, masculine voice belonged to the one they called Charlie Boy. He was one of the youngest of the new recruits. He’d only been in the area for two days, so he wasn’t included on any of their recent ops. The team needed to make sure he was ready. The “Golden Boy” looked too well-kempt for Brian’s good. He looked too clean, innocent, and green. Brian didn’t feel right getting the boy’s hands dirty. His short dark hair and smaller build on his solid frame said he still had some work to do before he was allowed out in the field. For now, he was helping Proph with research.
Shockingly enough, Hounder didn’t verbally respond. He just gave the kid a hand gesture. It didn’t stop the kid from continuing to talk shit to the other team members. On their way up, the four of them stated they wanted to do a walkthrough of the offices upon arriving. Brian had a feeling that was going to be put on hold for a few. The additional cars in the lot and around the building said the rest of the team was there, even if not in the offices. He and the other four were walking through the area making observations of the space when a beautiful woman walked out of one of the three grand-scale offices.
“Well, hello there, beautiful. My apologies for staring, but looking at you makes me tongue tied and stupefied.” Hounder leaned in to kiss her hand.
Isabelle rolled her beautiful, crystal blue eyes and almost missed the woman’s response. The woman spin-chopped Hounder’s chest then pressed her leg into his groin as she pushed him into a wall.
“Hello there, handsome. I’m Lieutenant Commander Wellsie Sharp and if you’re working here then you and I will be working together. One thing you should know is that the men I lay with know how to follow orders while still being a man. If you want this, then you need to prove to me that you can be that man, big boy. All this sexy won’t—I do mean won’t—settle for less. Sergeant Major Wallace, I’ll see you in twenty. Have fun boys and lady.”
Wellsie Sharp was the owner of that jasmine oil scent. Her creamy, caramel brown skin and dark brown eyes shined with a softness only she could carry off. Her dark brown, loose curls were wild on this day and fell around her shoulders. Her petite, but well-filled-out frame caused men to underestimate her strength. It was something she used to her advantage on a regular basis. She had assets that filled her out in all of the right places. He was a guy. He wouldn’t be that one if he didn’t notice. Brian began to inform the only other male in the room who didn’t know who she was just who the woman was that had hemmed him up.
“Staff Sergeant Madison, you’ve just met the latest addition to the crew and ...”
“The woman that is about to set my life right. I cannot believe she’s been walking the face of the earth and I didn’t know it.”
“Cool your jets there, Tommy. I think we need to discuss the rules of the office.”
“Cut the shit, B. There are no rules. It’s been no-holds-barred, dick-swinging-meets-battle-royale around these parts. You just brought puss one and dangled it like a doggy treat in front of a horny, rabid dog. This shit’s not going to be pulled back any time soon. You might as well step out of the way and let the chips fall where they may. Tell me I can’t go after that and you are just going to make it worse. Let it ride, B.”
